8x12 Cedar Catio With Full Enrichment Setup in Portland, Oregon

This spacious 8x12 cedar cat enclosure is designed for a lively crew of seven indoor cats. We had such a great time bringing this project to life, especially designing the full kitty playground inside with multi-level perches, ramps, hiding boxes, climbing routes, and custom-made enrichment features. Every detail was crafted by hand to give each cat their own space to climb, lounge, explore, and feel safe.
This project gave us a fun challenge, from creating a layout that works for seven different personalities to enclosing a slightly unusual back area and blending it seamlessly into the rest of the structure. The result is a beautiful, functional outdoor cat enclosure that the cats are going to love for years to come. 💛🐾

Large 8x8 Catio in Portland, OR
This large custom catio was built in Portland, Oregon, for three very lucky cats. We began by clearing an existing garden area to prepare the base. For this project, the catio floor was left as natural ground (dirt) so the clients can plant cat-friendly plants inside, bringing a touch of nature directly into the enclosure. A flagstone and river rock path was also incorporated, blending the structure seamlessly with the backyard landscape.
Built entirely from cedar and finished with a warm Timber Pro UV teak stain, this catio was designed for both durability and beauty. It features 1x1 heavy-duty PVC-coated black mesh, with all edges and staples covered by trim for extra protection and a clean, polished look. Additional trim was added along the base to tie the design together, and shaded polycarbonate roofing panels provide year-round comfort from the Pacific Northwest weather.
Inside, the catio was built with enrichment in mind. It includes multiple perches and ramps for climbing, three custom hiding boxes (one for each cat), and a tall floor-to-ceiling scratching post—perfect for keeping the cats active and entertained.
💡 Did you know? Cats love lounging on large stones or pavers. On hot summer days, they stay cool and refreshing, making them an irresistible spot for cats to stretch, roll, and relax.

10x10 Large catio built for our very own cats, Misty and Spooky!
This is our very own catio that we designed and built for our cats. The setup includes a small window catio, an 8-foot cat run, and a spacious 10x10 gable-roof style catio. The flooring combines river rock and flagstone, giving it a natural look and a cool lounging surface for the cats.
Inside, the space is fully accessorized with our custom-made catio accessories: perches and steps leading down to the ground, a hiding box with a bubble dome, a bridge spanning the structure (Misty’s favorite!), a bubble dome bed, and two pieces of driftwood that bring a natural touch. As a fun personal detail, we added lights and even a disco ball to make the catio cozy and unique at night.
We chose this multi-catio design because, like many cats, Misty and Spooky don’t always get along. Misty can be territorial, while Spooky sometimes plays the bully. Having three separate areas, the window catio, the tunnel, and the large catio, gives them the freedom to choose their own space depending on their mood. Sometimes they share, sometimes they don’t, and that flexibility keeps the peace.
They especially love the elevated spots like the window catio and tunnel, which overlook bushes full of wildlife activity. Living in rural Washougal, Washington, we’re surrounded by birds, squirrels, rabbits, deer, and coyotes (a neighbor once spotted a bear!). The catio lets Misty and Spooky safely experience the outdoors while keeping local wildlife protected. One of our favorite sights is watching the cats looking at the deer that sneak seeds from the bird feeder right outside the catio. Misty spends hours in the catio daily, while Spooky prefers his morning and evening outdoor time before napping the afternoon away indoors.
This project is special because it brings us so much peace of mind: our cats are enriched and safe, and the local wildlife is respected and unharmed.
