Number of cats: This Custom Catio in Kalama, WA was made for 5 adventurous cats, a mix of Savannahs and Maine Coons.
Features: One of the standout features is the kitty penthouse, which extends beyond the second-story deck. This unique design connects the upstairs balcony catio to the lower level of the home, creating a spacious overhanging section that allows the cats to move between levels with ease.
This catio overlooks the Columbia River, making it one of the most scenic projects we’ve ever created. The cats get to perch, climb, and lounge with breathtaking river views while staying secure and enriched.
This second-story balcony catio was built entirely from cedar lumber, painted to blend seamlessly with the home’s exterior. All staples and mesh edges were carefully covered with trim for a polished, finished look.
The enclosure features our popular heavy-duty 1” x 1” black PVC-coated wire mesh, which practically disappears from view while giving the cats unobstructed visibility of the outdoors. A shaded polycarbonate roof provides year-round protection from rain while keeping the space cool during hot summer days. Designed for multiple cats and built to last in the Pacific Northwest climate, this catio is as durable as it is beautiful.
This catio is fully loaded with enrichment features, including perches, ramps, and two floor-to-ceiling scratchers, one that was later added and serves as a cat tree. It also includes two cozy hiding boxes, making it an adventure-filled space for exploring, scratching, and napping.
What Makes This Catio Special:
The Catio was an unforgettable project for us. From start to finish, it was not only rewarding but also breathtaking since this catio overlooks some of the most stunning Columbia River views we’ve ever seen.
This catio was pre-built in our shop before being transported and assembled on-site. Working out all the framing details around the second-story deck railing, plus lifting and installing the elevated Kitty Condo, was a challenge we loved taking on. The result is a unique two-level retreat that connects the cats to the family’s outdoor spaces in a really special way.
What made this build even more enjoyable was the family themselves. They were so kind and welcoming, and their cats were active, curious, and full of personality, they were supervising every step of the project (or maybe spying on us 😉) from the windows the entire time. We’ll never forget their energy and excitement.
For us, the most rewarding part of this project is knowing that the family’s cats now have a safe outdoor space to run, climb, and lounge, all while sharing those beautiful Columbia River views with their humans. Every time we hear back from them or see the cats enjoying their catio, it brings us so much joy and reminds us exactly why we love doing what we do.
