Number of cats: This custom catio was built in Olympia, WA for 2 very lucky cats.
Features: Two separate catio enclosures connected by a long cat tunnel above the sliding door, giving the cats multiple areas to lounge, play, and safely enjoy the outdoors.
Instead of the typical square shape, we created a diagonal design to avoid a narrow path between the pergola and the catio. To make up for that space, we added an elevated Kitty Condo, built high enough to keep the walkway clear for the humans while giving the cats extra vertical room to explore. It’s a perfect example of how we tailor each build to both the home and the family’s needs.
This custom two-structure catio was crafted from cedar lumber and finished with a mocha Timber Pro UV stain, a pet-safe and low-VOC product we love for its durability in the Pacific Northwest climate.
Like many of our builds, it features our signature 1” x 1” black PVC-coated wire mesh, which blends into the background to provide the cats with safe yet unobstructed views. Trim details were added to cover mesh edges for a seamless finish, and a shaded polycarbonate roof ensures year-round weather protection. For easy access, we also installed a through-the-wall pet door, allowing the cats to move freely between the home and their outdoor retreat.
This custom design uses every corner to create variety. The left-side structure features a step ladder, scratching steps, and perches, while the right-side structure includes a floor-to-ceiling scratching post, a hiding box, and additional perches. Together, they give the cats multiple levels of activity and comfort while keeping pathways open for the family’s patio use.
What Makes This Catio Special:
This Olympia project was truly special for us because it took us outside of our usual Portland and Vancouver service area. Every single piece of this catio had to be pre-built in our shop and then carefully transported and installed on-site. That meant we had to think through every angle, every connection, and every detail ahead of time to ensure a smooth installation.
The unique design is what really makes this build stand out. With its diagonal wall and elevated Kitty Condo, the framing and roof required multiple custom cuts, angles, and sizes, every piece was tailored to fit seamlessly. It was a challenge, but also an exciting opportunity to push our creativity and craftsmanship.
Another reason this catio means so much to us is the story behind it. Our client had been looking for a catio builder in Olympia for over two years without any luck. Being able to bring The Catio Company’s work beyond Portland and Vancouver, and to help this family create a safe, enriching outdoor space for their cats, was incredibly rewarding.
Their backyard, complete with a pond, a pergola, and wildflowers, was already beautiful, but now it’s also a paradise for their cats. Seeing the cats enjoy their new space and hearing how happy our client is makes all the hard work worth it.
We’ve been absolutely thrilled with The Catio Company from start to finish. Despite other companies in the state turning us away, they were willing to travel to our location and create a fully custom catio just for us. Over the past seven months, we’ve collaborated closely with their team, and they’ve consistently gone above and beyond—even offering to return for any necessary adjustments. They recently completed what can only be described as our dream catio, and our fur babies couldn’t be happier!
