Large screened-in Catio in Beaverton, OR 🖤

This project holds a special place in our hearts. This is the second time we’ve had the honor of designing and building a catio for this family, who reached out to us again after moving into their new home in Beaverton, Oregon. Having worked with them before, they knew exactly what they were looking for: a larger, more functional screened-in catio that would give their cats more space to explore while seamlessly blending into their new home.

This custom screened-in catio was built using all cedar framing, painted to match the home’s existing patio for a seamless, cohesive finish. Cedar was chosen for its natural durability, resistance to rot and insects, and its ability to withstand outdoor conditions year-round.

For safety and security, the enclosure features 2×2, 14-gauge welded wire mesh, providing a strong barrier while maintaining visibility and airflow. On the exterior side, we added a pet-resistant screen, offering an extra layer of protection, privacy, and comfort.

This catio features one of our favorite accessory layouts to date, giving us the opportunity to fully lean into creativity while tailoring every element to the cats’ needs and personalities. Designed for four young, active cats, the interior was thoughtfully planned to encourage climbing, jumping, scratching, hiding, and rest at multiple heights.

We used a combination of black carpet and textured nubby gray carpet, all exterior-grade and weather-resistant, which adds visual contrast while providing comfort and durability throughout the space.

Along the front of the catio, we installed a series of scratching steps that lead up to an elevated perch and a custom-built hiding box. Multiple hiding boxes with acrylic bubble domes are integrated throughout the space, offering both enrichment and cozy retreat areas.

We intentionally left a side of the catio more open to accommodate outdoor furniture and a barbecue, so we incorporated a few elevated perches to maintain enrichment without overwhelming the space.

The left side of the catio is where the majority of the vertical playground comes together. This includes a floor-to-ceiling scratching post, a smaller connecting scratcher between perches, and a pass-through perch with a built-in opening that allows cats to move fluidly between levels. A large corner shelf with a bubble-dome bed offers an elevated resting spot with expansive views.

One of our favorite features in this design is a custom box-and-bridge system, where two suspended bridges connect to a central box, creating multiple pathways and dynamic movement opportunities. Additional elevated perches and a stepladder leading down to ground level complete the layout, ensuring easy access and continuous flow throughout the space.

All accessories, including ropes, carpets, acrylic domes, and structural components, are exterior-grade, handmade, and custom-built by us, designed specifically for this catio’s dimensions. Every element was thoughtfully sized and placed to match the cats’ ages, agility, and personalities, resulting in a highly engaging, durable, and visually cohesive environment.

What makes this catio special:

What truly sets this catio apart is the relationship behind it. Working with returning clients is always incredibly meaningful to us, and being trusted for a second time to design a space for their cats made this project especially rewarding. Having that ongoing connection allows us to build with intention, understanding not just the home, but the people and pets who live there.

This project also stands out for its thoughtfully designed accessory layout. Seeing the cats explore the space for the very first time, climbing, jumping, peeking out of the bubble domes, and quickly claiming their favorite perches, was a moment that reminded us exactly why we love what we do. The layout came together beautifully, offering the right balance of activity, challenge, and cozy resting spots for young, energetic cats.
