Features: This custom catio was built in the heart of Portland, Oregon for five beautiful cats who recently moved here from Hawaii. It features two connected enclosures joined by an elevated cat tunnel, giving the cats multiple spaces to lounge, explore, and safely enjoy the outdoors.
The first structure encloses a section of the home’s existing covered patio, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor living. From there, a long cat tunnel extends into a freestanding catio in the backyard. This setup allows the cats to stay close to their humans during outdoor gatherings, whether relaxing by the fire or enjoying the garden, making them part of family moments in a safe and enriching way.
This custom build uses cedar lumber stained in a rich Mocha tone from Timber Pro UV, a pet-safe, low-VOC stain designed to withstand the Pacific Northwest climate. It’s enclosed with 1” x 1” heavy-duty black mesh for both durability and safety, while a shaded polycarbonate roof offers protection from rain and sun.
This build incorporates perches, ramps, a bridge, a hiding box, and a bubble-dome bed. Each piece was thoughtfully placed to encourage exploration while giving the cats safe, comfortable spots to nap or keep watch over the backyard.

This catio was especially meaningful because it brought a dream to life. The family had long hoped for a safe outdoor space for their cats but couldn’t find a catio builder in Hawaii.
When they moved to Portland, we were finally able to make it happen. Creating a custom catio for their five cats in their new home was not only rewarding for us, but also such a heartwarming way to welcome them to the Pacific Northwest. Their kindness and excitement made this project a joy from start to finish.
